Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) announced the company inaugurated its first green hydrogen plant at Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh.

The plant, which uses a 10 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, was inaugurated by Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, and Sandeep Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL.

This is GAIL's is first green hydrogen plant and marks a major step towards completing the company's plans in the renewable energy space. GAIL noted that the plant can produce 4.3 tonnes per day of green hydrogen, which will be produced at a pressure of 30 kg/cm2 and have a purity of 99.999 percent.

GAIL plans to use the hydrogen produced at Vijaipur as a fuel for captive purposes in the various equipment and processes running in the complex.

The GAIL plant has been installed in line with the country's National Green Hydrogen Mission.

India has so far awarded tenders for incentives to support 412,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production. The country aims aiming to achieve 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen production by 2030, as part of plants to become energy independent by 2047. Earlier this month, its top renewable energy bureaucrat told the World Hydrogen Summit in the Netherlands India was capable of shouldering global demand for the fuel.

The government has issued a definition of green hydrogen, with support for both electrolyzer- and biomass-based pathways of production. In addition, the country is looking to set up 4-5 hydrogen valleys across India.
