BESS projects worth 130 MWh win contracts in Poland capacity market
For the first time, energy storage systems have bagged capacity market contracts in Poland energy auctions. Battery energy storage system (BESS) projects out forth by Hynfra Energy Storage (HES) and OX2 amounting to 130 MWh have won auction results for 2027 announced by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the country's electricity transmission system operator.
The HES, along with its investors Heyka Capital Markets Group and PKE Pomorze, has won a 17-year contract for a 7.5MW/ 30 MWh energy storage system.
The company has said that a 7.5 MW battery energy storage facility with a capacity of 4 hours will be built near the Wrocław urban area. In addition to providing the network support, the BESS will also store surplus renewable energy power and cooperate with an ultra-fast charging station for electric cars.
"This year's auction is the first one in which a capacity market contract was signed for energy storage systems. This is extremely important, as energy storage systems perfectly support the power system and have the ability to provide power to the grid faster than any other source. Emission-free technological solutions, such as energy storage facilities, can be the foundation of the country's energy security," Piotr Czembor, CEO of HES, emphasizes.
The investment platform, with Heyka Capital Markets Group and PKE Pomorze as partners, has its strategy focused on building long-term value for the Polish energy sector based on the use of energy storage systems. The Group reaffirms its willingness to participate in subsequent capacity market auctions with an extensive portfolio of energy storage facilities.
Hynfra Energy Storage, a developer of utility-scale energy storage systems, is the first company in the Polish market to provide comprehensive energy storage solutions in the storage as a service model and energy take-off for the production of renewable hydrogen.
The company plans to deploy 500 MW of battery energy storage in Poland. Together with investor Claritas, the battery energy storage systems deployed will participate in electricity wholesale markets and provide grid support services, according to HES.
OX2, on the other hand, has won contract for an energy storage project with a capacity of 50 MW. The energy storage project will be situated in southern Poland and have a capacity of 50 MW/100 MWh.
