The 9th edition of the IESW, organized by India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), opened with a host of technical sessions on its first day, which tried to captured the emerging technologies megatrends and latest innovations in some of the critical affairs of the battery manufacturing and energy storage development in India and global markets.

A total of seven technical forums, each dedicated to unique and interesting themes, saw speakers elaborating of the latest and emerging technological developments in battery chemistry, cell design, testing and certification, recycling and reuse, EV battery swapping, Battery as a Service (BaaS), microgrids, project finance, and so on.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, President – IESA, commented that the primary focus of IESW this year is on technology. "There are multiple technologies for multiple applications and use-case scenarios, from cell chemistry, design, and packaging to alternative battery technologies for energy storage, for instance".

"At the global level, big opportunities and markets for all these variety of technologies are emerging. At the local level, gone are the days when India was left with adoption of dated and obsolete technologies. It has now become a place for adapting and extending next-generation technologies in clean energy space", he said.

The session on advanced energy storage R&D and innovation dealt on rapid development of non-lithium ion batteries including Sodium-ion and metal-air batteries especially for certain applications like long-duration energy storage, while the session on testing and certification explored the criticality of having and adopting global standards for battery manufacturing in India.

Further, a technical session on battery recycling and circular economy grabbed much attention and lively participation of the audience. The presenters argued on the pros and challenges associated with reusing and recycling of used batteries, and pitched their innovative and efficient way and means to extract valuable materials from recycling without intensive energy use and in environmentally sustainable manner.

On the other hand, a parallel track of technical sessions on microgrids focused on the importance of microgrids in resolving issues such as last mile connectivity, remote accessibility and energy reliability. They also discussed on the challenges in execution of grid projects and called for global collaboration and partnerships in fostering ecosystem change to promote stationary energy storage in local grid networks.
