Stellantis reveals 'STLA Large' BEV platform targeting 800 km range

Stellantis has revealed the second of the four global BEV platforms planned for its future vehicle line-up, as part of its €50 billion investment over the next decade towards electrification. The latest 'STLA Large' BEV-native platform meant for D and E segment vehicles for global markets supports a wide-range of vehicle types and electric propulsion benefits, it claims. 

The latest platform is designed and engineered as a native BEV platform with the option of 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures, supporting battery pack options between 85 and 118 kWh energy ratings. 

The target is to achieve an overall range of 800 km (500 miles) for sedans, even supporting "future energy storage technologies when they reach production readiness", according to the automaker.  The platform is also conducive for fast charging, add up to 4.5 kWh per minute to the 800-volt battery pack.


Stellantis to invest $155 million for North American Electrification goals 

Stellantis will invest a total of $155 million in three facilities located in Kokomo, Indiana, US to produce new electric drive modules (EDM) that will help power future electric vehicles assembled in North America.

Further, the new platform features three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs) that incorporate the motor, power inverter and gear reduction, which can be configured in front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive layouts.

The power inverter employs silicon carbide semiconductor technology to minimize power losses. Propulsion system performance can be upgraded during the vehicle's lifespan via over-the-air software updates, claims Stellantis.

The STLA Large follows the launch of 'STLA Medium' BEV platform last year. The company has said that it will be used first in the North American market on Dodge and Jeep brands, followed by Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Maserati.

A total of eight vehicles are to be launched in 2024-2026 period with this BEV platform that also supports hybrid and ICE propulsion technologies.
