UK-based battery storage developer, Alcemi has secured planning permission for 1.5GW of battery energy storage projects, including one of the largest projects of its kind.

The two projects, Devilla Energy Storage project, a 500MW/1000MWh is located in the Fife North of Edinburg, and Rawhills Energy Storage, a 1GW/2GWh project located in Coalburn South of Glasgow. These projects were developed in collaboration with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) through their flagship funds as part of a 4GW portfolio of energy storage projects deployed across the UK at key locations.

"This is a fantastic achievement for Alcemi and advanced our mission to facilitate the UK's transition to clean energy," said James Forster, Chief Development Director of Alcemi.

"These projects will provide stability to the grid, limit network constraints, and are vital to maximizing our offshore wind generation. They are a key component to ensuring renewable energy is transported across the country," Forster added.

In March 2022, Alcemi and CIP entered a partnership for developing, constructing, and operating a 4GW portfolio of energy storage assets deployed across the UK.

The permission for the projects has been granted by the Energy Consents Unit (ECU). These projects are expected to support the transmission system by limiting network constraints and further enabling the integration of renewable energy sources in the grid—advancing clean energy transition in the UK.
