Battery energy storage developer Lion Storage has announced its its flagship battery storage project 'Mufasa', with a nameplate capacity of 364 MW/ 1,457 MWh located in the Vlissingen port (North Sea Port), one of the upcoming energy hubs in the Netherlands.

The company claims that the project as "the largest" utility-scale BESS in the Netherlands once commercially operational in 2026.

Also, Mufasa is strategically located, with direct access to TenneT's high voltage grid, situated close to several large-scale hydrogen electrolysis and offshore wind projects that are currently under development.

The storage facility will be a vital part of North Sea Port's well-developed energy and industry infrastructure, notes the developer. The area is already hosting two other battery energy storage projects - 'Castor' and 'Pollux' - both managed by SemperPower

Operating on a full merchant basis, the company has said that Mufasa will be active in all wholesale power and ancillary services markets, facilitating further integration of renewable power on the power grid. The facility will also ensure system balance, grid stability and long term security of supply in the region.

Lion Storage is developing a portfolio of energy storage projects throughout the Netherlands, targeting a combined capacity exceeding 1GW to be operational by 2030.

The Dutch developer's BESS systems are typically designed for 4 hours duration, to help maintain short-term power balance and manage excess power production to times of shortage.
