SESI 2024: Picking the right size and technology for your energy storage project

Energy storage is the need of the hour. But the multiplicity of technologies and variety of options – from different chemistries with different charging and discharging rates – to varying safety norms can be difficult for newcomers to navigate.

At the 4th international Stationary Energy Storage Conference in India conference, Nehal Divekar, Director, Customized Energy Solutions spoke on ways to identify the necessary energy storage size and the importance of selecting the right technology, depending on project use-case.

Customized Energy Solutions (CES) has developed expertise in battery manufacturing and testing as well as material supply chain analysis, which "helps us advise clients around expected cost of battery storage technologies, emerging chemistries, etc," he pointed out.

Using its experience, CES has also developed an optimization tool "CoMETS" that crunches numbers on the techno-commercial aspects of a project, such as revenue forecasting, financial modelling, dispatch optimization etc.

"We have a 24x7 market operations center in Philadelphia, USA, where we control around 25 GW of power assets across solar, wind, thermal generating capacities, including and 750 MW of battery energy storage. This gives us real-world experience on operating these assets on a daily basis," Divekar said.

The conference, held in New Delhi on March 19, was organized by the India Energy Storage Alliance, India's premier body for companies operating in the energy storage, e-mobility and green hydrogen space, to facilitate industry-government dialog on a sector of critical national importance.
